Come suggerito dal buon Mattia, ci provo anche io a vincermi un iPhone attraverso gli amici di The Apple Lounge. Fosse la volta buona che vinco qualcosa…

My iPod (20gb, 4th generation) broke a few months ago. No video, no pictures, no colors but still something that I was missing a lot. I also want a new wifi cell phone, so an iPhone would be a good product upgrade, but there’s still some time to wait in Europe, and some doubts to fade away.

iPod’s Inspection: when I turn it on, the hard disk clicks, and the operating system never shows up: I’m sure it’s the hard-disk. I look for suggestions on the Internet.

solution 1: slap your iPod strongly. Some people reported it working. Doubtfully, I tried to slap it a few times. No results

solution 2: replace the hard disk of an iPod. On the internet, I found a refurbished Toshiba hard-disk with the same form factor and 10Gb more: will it work? will the iPod software truncate to the first 20Gb? Life is a risk so I decided to go for it.

Cost of the product: $57.95 (€42.85)

Cost of a new 30 hancy-fancy video iPod:€269

Savings: 55%

And no way to buy the same hard disk in Europe, as far as I know.

I followed the instructions about disassembling and substituting the hard-disk, and everything worked perfectly. Then I connected the iPod with the firewire cable to my Mac, and it complained about an unreadable disk.

I opened Disk Utility, then I formatted the disk (seen as an Apple firewire disk!) as a single 30Gb Macintosh partition (journaled, not case-sensitive). Then voilà: iTunes recognized the iPod and started syncing with it. I stopped the process, restored the software (to make sure that everything was perfect), then restarted the syncing and now I have a perfectly working 4th generation 30Gb iPod.

Drawbacks:

• Costly: importing from the States is subject to crazy customs taxation.
• Few minor esthetic damages: opening the iPod with a screwdriver is probably not but what else to do?

Lo sviluppo delle tecnologie informatiche negli anni ‘40/’60 fece credere che la simbiosi tra cervello umano e macchina fosse dietro l’angolo: invece ancora oggi siamo piuttosto lontani dall’obiettivo.

Confesso che non so quale sia il grado di sofisticazione dei cagnolini robot della Sony, né ho mai indagato se la potenza mostrata da Deep Blue contro il campione mondiale di scacchi Kasparov fosse solo bruta forza di calcolo, o qualcosa di più.

Vedo però che anche Google, che da sempre ha come ambizioso scopo quello di indicizzare ogni tipo di informazione - con qualche piccola noia se si pronuncia la parola “privacy” - ha capito che le immagini le indicizzano molto meglio gli uomini dei computer, che ancora non “vedono” il contenuto effettivo dell’immagine.

Oggi allora mi son divertito a giocare per un paio di volte col Google Image Labeler, una simpatica sfida a chi “tagga” meglio un’immagine, ovvero fornisce parole chiave utili alla sua indicizzazione.

Il meccanismo adottato da Google è tanto semplice quanto scaltro:

• primo, far fare il lavoro agli utenti, visto che Google i dipendenti li paga, e pure profutamatamente
• secondo, minimizzare lo spamming. Il gioco avviene in forma di sfida, dove due utenti scelti a caso dal sistema taggano le stesse immagini e dove un tag “passa” solo se viene scritto da entrambi. Così bisogna essere in due a scrivere “miserable failure” su un’immagine di bush, sennò non funziona come sperato.

Non c’è che dire: è un altro esempio del “potenziale utente” offerto dalla rete!

Mentre ancora ci si interroga su cosa sarà il partito democratico, una quercia coi petali o una margherita con le ghiande, io ho fatto qualcosa davvero di sinistra: ho acquistato un fon… ma non quello per i capelli!

Cosa è allora? Fon è un’azienda che produce un wireless access point chiamato la fonera; dietro registrazione (gratuita) come utenti, questo oggetto permette di condividere una parte della propria banda di accesso ad internet con altri utenti.

Gli utenti fon (i foneros) accedono gratuitamente alla banda disponibile e condividono la propria con gli altri utenti fon. Il mio accesso ad internet si allarga quindi a tutti i possibili access point di Fon, che aumentano di giorno in giorno, e sono ormai in numerose parti del mondo, come si vede dalla mappa (ottimizzata per firefox).

Il costo dell’aggeggio è di 40 euri, ma con un trucchetto l’ho ottenuto per la metà esatta: mi è bastato chiedere ad un altro utente fon scovato a caso su internet (e residente vicino alla mia abitazione milanese) di “invitarmi” ad acquistare il router, attraverso la promozione fonero gest fonero. Et voilà!
